I've given up on soybeans, peanuts and a few other things. Focusing on what I've had success with in the past. Not that I'm done experimenting, but for now, it's "tried and true".

@ZenHeathen Garden stores and other places sell compost thermometers, which have a long stem to stick in the pile. I got mine for under $20.
