Unfortunately I was only able to join for the third and last day of FediForum, but the energy was quite strong even then!

There were some interesting discussions with @ozoned@btfree.social @reiver@mastodon.social and others (@johannab@cosocial.ca, @j12t@j12t.social, etc) about fediverse payments and growing the open social web — this spanned two session slots, actually!

One thing that came out strongly was the need for content creators to get paid. This directly echoes @paige@masto.canadiancivil.com's talk from @fedimtl earlier this year. The other half was reflecting on the lack of appropriate value-adds for donators, such as private groups.

We have all of these things, but separately. Perhaps combining them into an easy-to-use service is the secret sauce that will open up the fediverse to content creators.

There is work with the Interledger Foundation (@jeremiah@alpaca.gold) to make the financial side happen. There's ongoing work with CrowdBucks (@reiver@mastodon.social) to connect fediverse accounts with payment gateways. On the threadiverse side, each of us (NodeBB, Lemmy, Piefed) have support for private groups, but not federated private groups.

This might be an opportunity for the threadiverse implementors to work together (especially with @mayel@bonfire.cafe and the rest of the SWICG Groups Task Force (@groups)) to bring federate private groups out of the realm of theoretical possibility and into reality.

      @silverpill @julian @fedimtl @ozoned @reiver @johannab @j12t @paige @mayel In this case, yes! I was only briefly in this session, and I didn't talk about Web Monetization.

SWF received money from ILF to work on four research projects: Fediverse sustainability, creator economy, cooperatives, and Web Monetization in multimedia Fediverse apps. We're not a buzz marketing agency.

I post about our work in our blog, but I'm also happy to answer your direct questions any time.

@silverpill@mitra.social I have no stake in Interledger, my interests go as far as "I don't want to have to muck about with rolling my own payment processing", and that's it.

@jeremiah@alpaca.gold and @reiver@mastodon.social were present to discuss their experience in the finance side of things, and their input was appreciated. I made sure to stress the importance that as much of this needs to be out of my hands as possible (this also tracks with a lot of my opinions about AP adoption, too)

As for federated private groups, while I know they exist in Hubzilla and Streams, they're not broadly compatible with 1b12, which you must agree has far outclassed both 400e and 171b in usage.

While that alone is not a reason to pick one FEP over another, it makes it worth considering for that point alone.

Mitra got mentioned once or twice IIRC, even, I’m sure it’s amongst the collective heap of “things I need to learn more about but there are only 3 days…” notes.

Also it caught my attention a little while back because the first srs health tech company I worked for was Mitra Imaging.

@silverpill@mitra.social I'm not certain. I think if they do support them they're likely internal only, like NodeBB and Piefed.

@silverpill Of course. Elgg supports all types of groups, including private ones (this depends on the settings of the corresponding plugin).

Here’s an example of how it looks — this is a public group with ActivityPub enabled: https://demo.wzm.me/activitypub/groups/165/

@silverpill As for private groups, right now you’ll see more notifications than actual posts. I think our team will provide a full implementation in the near future. But to reiterate, at the moment this already works on the federation level.

You’re underestimating the power of Elgg 🙂

@j12t Honestly, I don’t really understand why many developers keep overlooking Elgg. We’ve built a full-featured federated ecosystem on top of it, from stores to communities, and it’s working well in production.

I’m planning to publish our release soon, and it’s going to be big. For now, you can already explore and use the current codebase.
