    Reading the reference papers quickly, there are brief mentions of infection control -- the glassware is "flamed" and Dakin's Solution is applied to the organ.

      The Time cover is from 1938. The Edgar Rice Burroughs Science Fiction novel about organ transplants is from 1927.
