      @matus_chochlik It's been some years since I did a full rewatch, and apart from some episodes it did age reasonably, and some episodes are absolutely golden still

            I must object on the idiot: Rom wasn't an idiot. He was just somewhat autistic, and in a wrong place. Once he starts respecting himself and finding Marx, he becomes an union leader, and finally becoming [spoiler].

            Wikipedia says that according to Lower Decks, he was a succesful leader who led Ferengis into the Federation.

                  @iju I didn't read the idiot as derogatory, he was a good person who tried his best even if he didn't always have the right knowledge or tools! Certainly people thought he was, but I don't recall the show ever being cruel about its depiction of him? Might be misremembering

                        @sinituulia

                        The early seasons saw him somewhat as a punching bag without feelings.

                        So not as much intentionally cruel, as dismissive. Which in someways is worse.

                        (Though I'm not throwing stones: it may well be they had the arc for Rom designed before-hand, and felt that to make it work they needed him to take several hits for the team.)

                          I tried to find that incredible video edit of Garak and Bashir meeting, but my bookmarks are a mess. It's just very incredibly gay and it's so good.

                          I watched as a child, and then a couple of times after that. Most recent rewatch was years ago at this point though

                              @iju @sinituulia I don't think they had Rom's arc planned, but rather it came naturally as Nog's arc evolved (and Nog arguably has the best arc in all of star trek). Rom really changes because of Nog, there's a very specific moment where Rom stands up for Nog joining star fleet which is his turning point. That entire turning point is setup entirely from Nog. It's one of my favorite moments in the show, Nog's courage inspires Rom to stand up for Nog, which in turn give Rom courage. Nog is awesome

                                        @sinituulia I like the hologram of Frank Sinatra much more than I thought I would. He's not "trapped between two worlds", he's not angsty about being a hologram or trying to become "more human". He's just a guy who is all about helping other people be happy.

                                          There's certainly a lot that can be shown about how Rom fought through institutionalized concepts of his upbringing and learning to accept others through the medium of his own son and breaking a cycle he would have been stuck in. There can be some queer parallels in this realizing that one doesn't have to take familial abuse. Rom is big hearted enough, though, to continue to associate with his brother and even soften some of Quark's edges
