    I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.

    People often avoid making small positive changes because they get caught up in trying to go all the way. For example, “I could never go vegan. I love bacon too much”.

    So then go vegan plus bacon. Or vegetarian plus bacon. Or just switch to oat milk and eat more vegetables. Whatever small change you can make is good

    @danirabbit

    I could not agree more.
    In all honesty, I love *all* food, and culturally, I live among meat eaters. Being 100% vegan or even vegetarian is nearly impossible.

    Over the last few years, through various incremental steps, my diet is over half vegan and almost completely vegetarian.

      @danirabbit People usually underestimate how much difference small, incremental changes make over time.

      If you get into the habit of preparing, say, 2 vegan meals per week, that's 100 vegan meals per year.

      Plus, once you've got the hang of it, adding a third vegan meal isn't so hard. Or sometimes a fourth one, maybe. And suddenly you're at 150 per year.

      It's the same for all the other good things. Doing a little, on a regular basis, just adds up, and opens further opportunities for change

      @slothrop @danirabbit My first step was deciding that I'd only have mammal meat at most once a week. That covered the contingencies, like being stuck at lunch having to eat at the campus cafeteria and the only appetizing option being the pepperoni pizza.

        @danirabbit this is exactly how we managed the transition to being vegetarian. Started out with small changes and added on over time. Now it has been almost 15 years. My only (very rare) exception left is marshmallows. If it had been forced as a “be perfect and do it in one move,” I don’t think I would have stuck with it tbh.

          Maybe you can’t buy everything local. What one thing can you start buying local? Can you switch from Starbucks to the local coffee shop? Can you switch from Petco to the local pet feed store? Can you switch from Dominoes to a local pizza place?

          Maybe you can’t completely de-Google or de-Apple or de-Amazon your life. Can you switch one thing? Can you use DuckDuckGo? Move your passwords to Bitwarden? Open a Fastmail account?

          @danirabbit here in Europe I use an app called UdenUSA which helps identify which products have links to the USA by scanning the barcode. It also suggests alternative products that do not have any links to the USA. Spent 30c more on my toothpaste today too because the app told me the cheaper one was made in PRoChina and I do like to also avoid their stuff when I can. https://udenusa.dk

            @argv_minus_one @danirabbit well the problem is that synthetic meat isn't 100% completely perfect with zero ethical or environmental or taste or texture issues, so it's basically a complete waste of time.

            /sarcasm for Poes Law.

              But if you really want to find out, just post "#syntheticmeat has absolutely zero #ethical issues and is completely fine" here on Mastodon, and some joyless bastard will be around in 5 minutes to tell you you're wrong...

                @danirabbit Yeah, quite often something worth doing is worth doing incompletely or badly (depending on what it is) than not doing it at all. The important bit is knowing that you're not there yet, so you'd still look for better ways.

                Plus like something like going vegan can be a pretty long road, like having to learn how to cook new meals and so different ingredients and possibly even techniques, learning new restaurants or food stores, …

                    @danirabbit Sing it.

                    "I could never live like it's 2021" then mask some of the time, like at doctor's offices, on planes, and during surges.

                    If you can't tolerate an N95 (or can't find one that gets a good seal), wear a surgical with a mask brace. Or wear cloth. The best mask is the one that gets worn.

                    If you don't have an air purifier, crack a window.

                      @danirabbit A while ago I decided that's the way for me too, although it's 'vegan + burger' for me 🙂 Forged the phrase 'undogmatic primarily plant-based diet' (UPPD) to describe it.

                                @danirabbit examining the reasons you want to go vegan is also helpful. If it's climate change, keeping cows is very polluting, so eating less beef and dairy is a good step. If it's compassion for animals, look into organic farming. Sustainability? Buy MSC fish. Some of these things are more expensive, so that's also a good motivation to eat less of it 😉. Every time I look at the meat aisle, I'm surprised by the cost of the stuff.

                                    @danirabbit For this specific reason I went vegetarian + fish/sea food.

                                    If I were purely vegetarian going out with my friends would be very difficult here in Bavaria. Thus, when we go out for dinner it is easier for everybody to choose a restaurant.

                                    At home I cook 50% vegan, more than 40% vegetarian. Only sometimes we have some fish or sea food, especially when we have guests.

                                    Groceries are mostly local, organic/sustainable. We don't buy processed food, which is easier because I love cooking and am a good cook too.

                                        I can’t remember where I saw it, but I feel like today is a good time to revisit the concept of “Vegan + bacon”.

                                        The way I do it for myself is: you eat 3 meals a day, that's 21 meals a week: how many of those can be vegetarian?
