@pearofdoom not just restores don't forget, if you have anything sensible that validates your backups at the remote location you'll get stung for that too.

@pearofdoom there is ASI, but I've not used them and the lower cost storage is "cold" and also don't know if they care about smaller users. Was the only other one I came across when I was looking (like $15/TB for hot, $5/TB for cold, no egress or api charges)

@pearofdoom oh 100% this is the best way if you can imo.

I think it's also the sort of thing where "like minded" folks could help each other out what with full encryption these days and UFB. Backup swaps used to be more of a thing I feel. Though that was when I used to swap tapes with a friend back in the UK to keep offsite backups.

I was a bit odd growing up maybe 😅

@pearofdoom like purely from a "I know where this is" thing it's handy but also it has another often overlooked upside.

If things really go to shit, you can probably travel and get the Pi/HDD/etc. and bring it home to do a faster restore than over the internet ever would likely be.

                      I have a domain name.
I'm expecting to use fastmail for mail
then maybe try out object store with catalyst cloud.
I'll need to hone down to just the essentials for backups but that's fine.
i have a NAS for backups and a blu-ray 5 1/2 drive sitting here in box.

immich has superceded google photos for me.
google doesn't support drive desktop app on linux so their sync fabric is no longer of use.
I'm wanting to disassociate from US based big tech.

@pearofdoom made all the harder by them not allowing the complete removal of their "upload by default Photos app" (least on Apple devices). Can only "Remove from Home Screen"

They need to be forced to allow you to use another Photos app as the default.

                          Although I use a Pi4 for it, because a 5 is overkill

@alex @pearofdoom @Phil_Tanner I run them separately, but for no good reason.
I personally prefer Wireguard-UI or something like that for a WG setup, instead of PiVPN, but either way, it's not too complex, and a Pi4 can easily handle wg/pi-hole/nas on a single device.
