@rayckeith related to this, and it was several years ago. There was a guy in one of the more northern cities of the United States. He had to walk something like literally 10 miles to catch public transportation and then transfer a couple of buses just to get to work then repeat to get home in the evening.
Over the course of 20 years, he never missed a day of work. People took up money involving a car. They learned this. C I’ll see if my Google fu is good enough to find the story later -

C I’ll see if my Google fu is good enough to find the story laterI’ve seen a number of different specifics about the story, salary and total mileage and so forth. But I know that it was a real thing.
