Incidentally, yesterday's event(s) are why I ALWAYS switch off video autoplay in all browsers and social media apps and refuse to use TikTok or other video media platforms.

I think the people who are getting murdered in the footage, are receiving significantly more harm.
@houba One thing is to spread a word that something terrible happened. Collect the evidence for court. Make sure it doesn't get destroyed.
But the other thing is that the sole purpose why they do it is to spread fear, to make people to think twice before attending such protests. And by making uprepared people to see the video, you may be actually helping to spread subconscious fear, which is exactly why the tyrants hire such thugs...
So really, while spreading the word may be important - and I understand, why normal Americans somehow seek the solidarity of the outside world, now - it is not the same like spreading the videos of someone dying.
It is true, that myself I boosted the situation photo taken just before the murder, but I believe this is different case. I believe it is true and I in that case, it shows man holding cell phone, not gun.
We have one copy of the murder photo just now on our instance and I am going to ask uploader to add CW or sensitive content flag.

I do not need to see that kind of shit, and you should think twice before sharing it with strangers without a content warning.
@cstross
Were your sensibilities hurt? Just imagine how it will feel when YOU or a loved one are their target. -

I have no problem with ensuring consent, and broadly agree with you and cs.
My issue here is raising the sensibility of people exposed to the footage to 'the most long-term harm'. This dismisses the violence in the event, I see this as a process of othering, and a pillar of colonialism.
The in-group, not seen as being directly effected by the situation, are given more consideration then the 'other' in an attempt to debase the event in the in-groups collective memory.

@houba really, I am not sure. The rules of my own instance forbid posting gore. We have already one copy of the image here, so I am not sure.
I don't think the effect of writing about the incident and posting related images or videos, but not the killing video itself, is somehow lower. The psychological effect of seeing the actual video may be actually increasing subconscious fear, which may be exactly what was intended by people who gave orders to escalate and kill.
The problem si, that it is somehow making the murderer famous, in a strange way.. there is the other crowd, who would be somehow strangely attracted by this. While yes, it shows, that Trump lies, it is not something we already don't know.
I really can't judge this. It is important, that someone filmed it, because it will be used as evidence for court (at least one day, if not immediately). It will make history. It will be eventually public, but published as historic footage.
I somehow don't believe, that the words are less true if you don't provide video. There are other relevant videos and images. And if it is really necessary, at least, the sensitive content flag is minimum requirement...

Were your sensibilities hurt? Just imagine how it will feel when YOU or a loved one are their target.@donhawkins @cstross those of us not living in America are less likely to be impacted like that. This is the Internet, not the USA. You can put it behind a fucking content warning so that you're not blasting live-action murder into everyone's brains.
We already hate and oppose ICE with our absolutely zero influence over the situation. We don't need convincing it's bad. Stop. -

@cstross I am Israeli. I am traumatised enough from what I experience and from what I know so I don't need to be more traumatised from what I see.

@cstross Why? Sensibilties hurt? What I saw was State's sanctionned execution! And it needs to be shown to wake peoples the FUCK Up to how fucked Up your country is right now!

You are having a slightly different conversation then I am.
What you are saying seems well thought out, there will always be edge cases when deciding these things, and a multitude of opinions and considerations.
The subconscious fear you mention is the fear that you may be subjected to this, this risk is real regardless of you viewing the footage. The consent framing is good, CS right to disable AutoPlay.
There is also the issue of GenAI producing video which can be hard to verify.

@houba yes, the GenAI videos putting in doubts the reality of every photo or video is another huge problem. But I am afraid the current news will turn out to be true.
Using CW and sensitive content flag when uploading media depicting recent death is just basic sign of respecting human dignity of the victims.
The images won't change anything immediately. What matters, is how the society will respond. Mostly American society now, but Europe is facing very similar tendencies.
Really, as a small instance moderator, which coincidentally has rules to prevent gore content, asking for CW is probably the only thing I can do to stay consistent.

@WastelandWandrr @cstross you don't need to force cruelty down people. I get that you may be incensed (so are most).

You can just as easily tweak your user settings. But no, whining, pissing, and moaning at others to do your heavy lifting is more satisfying it appears. Videos do not have to automatically play. The individual user controls whether they do or not. The poster could have used a CW (and oh golly don’t we wish they had!) but I suspect those crying coz they hadn’t RTFM’d their own, individual user settings would find something else to cry about. -

@cstross@wandering.shop I'm so glad blocking autoplay on youtube mostly works for me in firefox, unfortunately only when I open in a new tab, but that has become a habit already and for shorts I need to do that anyways so my userscript can redirect me to the regular video player page (autoplay still blocked ofc), so I never interact with that infinitely scrolling garbage

@WastelandWandrr @cstross a lot of people are well awake to it already, is the point. Send it direct to your Trumpy family if you want to make a real difference, genAI avatar (the master's tools won't dismantle the master's house, just FYI)
