God I love that someone is doing actual analysis on this question that my mom and sisters constantly harangued me about as a kid. (We were even gender split in the house.)

I have recently concluded, at least for public restrooms, that the correct answer is actually that all toilet seats should be spring-loaded so they always lift. Because too many lazy asshole dudes will just pee on it instead of lift it, and that is by far a worse outcome than having to lift or lower it.

(My long term position has been that the sitters and standers should split the lift/lowering work equally. Unsurprisingly, my sisters did not agree and thought us boys should do all of the work.)

@lkanies Back in 2019 I was in a bad car accident. For months I was in a C-collar and my left leg in a cast.

I live in a small town where a lot of us would go to a little diner on Friday nights for "grill" night. I missed it for months but I was finally well enough to go.

I hobbled into the restaurant with my walker and the entire place (many of whom knew me) got quiet.

I said "you leave the toilet seat up one too many times ..."

      It killed.

@lkanies @kboyd Men are responsible for lifting and lowering the toilet seat. There really isn't much of a debate. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@mlanger @kboyd @lkanies Yes, and you should be closing the lid as well before flushing to limit the aerosol of nasty things swirling into the rest of the room.

@mlanger @kboyd I mean, there is and always has been in my house.

I don’t really understand why it should only be the responsibility of one group, and not shared. I had to teach myself to raise and lower the seat with my foot. Why shouldn’t everyone else?

@scuttlebutt @mlanger @kboyd this is actually what eventually killed the debate at my house. Not about which gender has to touch the toilet, but about the health aspects

@lkanies @mlanger "Restore to default" is not a responsibility to be shared. It is the responsibility of the person who modified the state.

@kboyd @mlanger exactly. And that’s why women need to lift the seat back up after they pee.

I don’t see any way “men should do all the work” is the right answer unless you just think men should do the work. I can see why, sometimes, but everyone acts like there’s some objective reason, as opposed to just… they think men should do the work.

I’ve been having this argument for nearly 40 years, and I assume you’re just as set in your opinion.

@kboyd @mlanger and I my whole original point was about the risk of asshole dudes peeing on the seat in public toilets, not what happens at home

@lkanies Yes, quite. The default state is down, because everybody poops. And some people poop more urgently than others.

@scuttlebutt @kboyd @lkanies Yes, I think closing the lid is a good idea. The only time it's not a good idea is if the toilet seat is made of painted wood. (The old ones were made that way; I recently was in a place that had a wood one.) When you close the lid, moisture builds up under the lid seat and the wood absorbs it. I think that's worse than some aerosol from flushing.

@mlanger @kboyd @lkanies Show of hands for who's ever been pinched or splintered from a wooden seat? (I have)

Haven't seen wooden lid nor seat in aeons though, not even in outhouses.
