  3. Hey fellow admins, here's something you can do to make the fediverse massively better for anyone who's a woman and/or Black: ban "reply guys", mansplainers, and sea lions (https://wondermark.com/c/1062/) on your server.

    Hey fellow admins, here's something you can do to make the fediverse massively better for anyone who's a woman and/or Black: ban "reply guys", mansplainers, and sea lions (https://wondermark.com/c/1062/) on your server. You know what I mean. Make a rule against it. Encourage other people to report it. Go into the comments of a popular post and proactively block or ban the people engaging in this behaviour. If a particular server is known to be bad for this because the admins tolerate this behaviour from their users, preemptively mute or block it server-wide. Consider public shaming.

    Just because it's not outright harassment or slurs doesn't make it okay. It still actively drives people away.

    If this is an undue burden for you or your moderators, your server is too big. Stop accepting new users and add more moderators.

      @nev

      My server rule against it says:

      No harassment. If a user explicitly asks you to disengage, you should.

        @jens @nev that rule is far better. The "sea lion" metaphor is irretrievably broken because the character doesn't object to the behaviour but an unchangeable characteristic of a minority in their world. The sea lion could stop being an insufferable prat, but they will still be a sea lion and included in the objection.

          @mjr @jens the comic is not actually about being racist against sea lions, it is about the particular behaviour the sea lion is engaging in. Likewise "sealioning" is not commonly used to refer to someone standing up against bigotry, but about people who jump into conversations with a persistent "debate me bro" attitude. Hope this helps
