back at my dad’s for his memoirs. about to get into the bit where he fled Northern Ireland because the IRA were trying to kill him for the crime of having an older brother who married a Catholic.

the part where he was visited by British intelligence agents is funny though, apparently they introduced themselves as John Smith and Jim Brown (or something similar) and even at 14 my dad just looked at them and went “suuuure”

always incredibly weird to think that the chain of events that led to my birth includes both the Troubles and the sinking of the Titanic. I can draw direct lines from these events to my existence.
the latter one is a good story for parties, at least, but mentioning the Troubles always puts a bit of a dampener on a conversation, for some reason.

@astronomerritt Part on my chain of events involves a Ukrainian Princess and an Austrian Prince, and somehow, I'm not related to either of them.

@astronomerritt I exist partially because of apartheid, but in a good way. My dad was planning on moving to South Africa (because that's where the mining jobs were), but it was right when the anti apartheid protests really started up and he thought better of it.
It's either that or that he just really liked Neil Young as to why he ended up in Canada, depends on his mood when he's telling it.

@simonbp Oh, that’s absolutely fascinating. Tragedy and conflict shaping lives even thousands of miles away.
Also, peak dad humour.

@SteveJB Ooh, I'm going to have to ask you to tell that story! Of course, you don't have to. But I DO have to ask.

@AlexanderVI @astronomerritt At one point, most of the mines in northern Ontario used a hoist he design. Then the commodity market collapsed in the late 80s and did something else
