@jzb Do not underestimate separation anxiety in cats who have their bonded human "disappear" on them.
A few summers ago, my SO and I went to my mother's summer cottage 30 minutes from the city where we lived. I would drive back each evening to water/feed our two cats, but as it happened, my grey bonded cat was always out roaming.
When we arrived home he basically read me the riot act, and for months after that experience he would reproachfully sit in front of the door whenever I made to leave.
