I don't understand how people think they can just re-write chat app without considering how it will be subject to the same dumb regulation discord just has been targeted as first?

Matrix and whatever else out there is will eventually get targeted by these dumb repressive authoritarian regulations too... or get sold to Larry so they can make it radicalization ragebait platform for the rich billionaire puppet masters whether that is through bunch of shady VCs or Larry himself (TikTok)

@pinkforest thus the only correct reaction is multiple approaches:
- Refuse to use #centralized, #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider solutions.
- #SelfHost (or pay someone to host it for you!)
- encrypt harder
- Put your chat on @torproject / #Tor i.e. use #OnionShare)
- refuse any "#KYC" aka. "#AgeVerification" as a matter of principle!
Otherwiae we get the #Enshittification cycle going...

@pinkforest As much as I think we should DEFINITELY also push back against these draconian laws and authoritarian politicians, I wish them good luck buying every Matrix server out there.
The agility of decentralized and opensource systems make it infinitely harder to regulate, because you'd have to go after every individual software package, and server that hosts it. And don't even get me started on truly server-free decentralized architectures.

@anthropy How many will use Matrix if t hey manage to nuke element.io and the main ones ? How many will use Matrix after it's essentially self-hosted ?

@pinkforest thanks to the poor experience it has when you try to fit everyone on one instance, there are a ton of instances,
and if they do ever end up nuking the centralized one, you can bet that new ones will pop up elsewhere,
and if they take out the entire software, people will fork it,
and if they ban all forks, people will take the entire concept elsewhere,
and if they ban the entire concept of such servers, there are plenty fully serverless architectures e.g Briar, Jami, SimpleX, etc

@anthropy Problem with Discord is that a lot of people can use it that are not into self hosting and are not technical. To replace something like Discord it needs to be usable for people who are not technical.

@pinkforest well there's a few things to be said there;
- Not everyone has to host it for everyone to be able to use it
- People are working tirelessly to make these things easier and better in every way, and it's not far-fetched to have e.g one-click hosting setups where it's as easy as hosting a Wordpress blog or alike (but again, not required for people to just join!)
- Server-free architectures like Briar/Jami/SimpleX/etc do not require any hosting, full stop, you can use them w/o internet
