@0xabad1dea do you also worry about your disk when you hear the opening bars of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation?

@0xabad1dea having to actively remind myself that my laptop has M.2 SSDs inside every time I feel my blood run cold when I accidentally bump it onto something (even if it's powered off).

@0xabad1dea i mean, i'm still nervous about magnets near my computer but that's because the case is metal and a neodymium magnet flying into it can be Bad™

@0xabad1dea I still don't like the idea of putting payment cards near my cellphone... nevermind that I haven't used a magstripe in well over a year... OTOH, all my various cards are contactless now, and I don't want them near my cell NOW b/c which one of them will read?

@stonebear2 @0xabad1dea you're joking, but i was recently at a hotel with magstripe locks and, not knowing ball, kept my card in the same pocket as my phone

the lady at the front desk, reprogramming my card, stated the eternal advice of not keeping magstripe cards with your phone as if it was something blindingly obvious

@0xabad1dea I remember the visceral horror I felt seeing a younger colleague use magnets to attach notes to the side of their PC.

@0xabad1dea Buying a laptop with an ssd inside was freeing... after a while. After a couple of *crash* "shit shit shit, no wait it's an ssd"-s.

@0xabad1dea I have caught myself freaking out about getting a magnet too close to a tablet, when the tablet's cover latched with the magnets *built into the device*.

@0xabad1dea I've finally come around in this and have realized that the flat steel sides of a computer case are a great place to display fridge magnets.

Especially if you have a fridge with a stainless finish that magnets don't stick to.

@0xabad1dea Speaking of magnets and computers, there's actually still a risk!

A couple months ago I gave my nibling an old but still very good laptop as a massive upgrade to their computer I gave them over 10 years ago. As I was showing them how to use it, they passed their phone over it incidentally and it went to sleep. It seemed random.

"Are there magnets in your phone?"

                                        "My case does."

"Ah, you must have passed it near the lid close sensor and put it to sleep."
