The food chain is what it is. Pigeons pair up for life though. Somewhere one is still waiting for a bird that won't come home.

@angusm I once watched a falcon disassemble a pigeon in my back yard. When he was done, I went out to inspect the remains. Aside from feathers, there was one drop of blood in the snow and absolutely nothing else except the falcon's footprints.
