      @janeishly @BashStKid @CiaraNi

      NAS is lovely but still a risk unless you also have an offsite copy. I have family members in different parts of the country but ideally I'd like to be able to keep a copy on the other side of the planet...

      There's a fedi service waiting to be created! (how to stop it becoming just another cloud service?)

        I'm thinking of the implants and brain hacking in, I believe it was, Neuromancer. It's been a while. My favorites were Count Zero and Pattern Recognition, which if memory serves is about corporate takeover of every aspect of life.

          @Su_G @Pepijn In my case, I'm using a simple, old-fashioned solution - I bought a SanDisk portable external hard drive. I just bung it in my computer and do a manual backup.

              @OneInterestingFact @janeishly @CiaraNi My literal solution to that you’re running your regular machine backups to the NAS, the NAS is running its own state-save infrequent snapshots for your library data, and twice a year you copy the whole thing onto some slow-as-shit old drives (who cares if it takes a few days?).

                😬 Saving this thread for all the links. Thank you! I also saw a post saying that there were reports of injuries that suggested sound weapons were used by the US in Venezuela. This would be a very dangerous precedent. Untraceable.

                      ’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

                          Before I could pick my 2026 goal for #DanmarkSkifter, I did a digital status. I was mildly surprised when I saw my 2025 digital changes together. I looked at the list and thought: ’Tell me you hang out in the Fediverse without telling me you hang out in the Fediverse.’

                          From Outlook to Tuta
                          From Office to Libre
                          From MS Authenticator to Ente Authenticator
                          From Google Play to F-Droid
                          From Spotify to AntennaPod
                          From Firefox to Vivaldi
                          From DuckDuckGo to NoAIDuckDuckGo
                          And I bought a back-up drive.

                            Why is no one asking these questions:

                            Why are the wealthiest corporations shoving AI so hard?

                            Why are billionaires so keen on this dubious product?

                            Why are billions of investment dollars being wasted on this white elephant?

                            Why are politicians running away from AI issues?

                                  @gambolputte @CiaraNi @Tutanota indeed, I am thinking of making an account for my wife as well to start with, and start sharing between the two of us. Tuta to Tuta. It's slightly expensive to have two, and maybe later even more accounts, but it is such a relief to f. ex. finally feel safe to build a contact list to name just one thing.

                                  @Orewoet @gambolputte @CiaraNi Shared calendars is only possible if both use Tuta - because of the encryption. You can ask support to enable the family option for you so you can add users.

                                    @CiaraNi Very good move. Just last week I found a completely unused #Microsoft One app on my computer and deleted it. For those still on #Windows, there's a nifty tool I have seen on social media a week ago to** remove all the intrusive eeew yuck of AI from the computer** (usual warning about running scripts from the internet unchecked apply) https://github.com/zoicware/RemoveWindowsAI I am not affiliated or otherwise in contact with the developer, other than bowing in awe

                                    #removeAI #removeWindowsAI #dumpmicrosoft

                                      @Orewoet @gambolputte @CiaraNi Shared calendars is only possible if both use Tuta - because of the encryption. You can ask support to enable the family option for you so you can add users.

                                      @Tutanota @gambolputte @CiaraNi

                                      I admit that I don't really understand the Family option. I guess that the family option gives the possibility to add a family member to a subscription, so there is one "admin" for two (or more) persons.

                                      But it costs the same as two separate subscriptions, so I personally don't really see the point.
                                      It sounds good though, so is there perhaps another difference I am missing?

                                      Edit: I found out that it gives a shared storage and a shared email possibility. Hmm...

                                        ”42% of Danes want to try alternatives to Big Tech. 68% would like to reduce their screen time. But far fewer act on it.

                                        Habits hold us back. Network effects bind us to the same platforms as everyone else. This only changes if we shift collectively. When we shift together, new habits become easier to maintain.

                                        When enough of us shift simultaneously, alternative platforms gain the critical mass they need. When we act collectively, change is possible.”

                                        @CiaraNi #danmarkskifter is a fantastic idea, but isn't it contradictory that their website, directly or indirectly, has trackers? Two (2) found by Privacy Badger and Ublock Origin.

                                        Tracking is bad. If they want us to leave big tech, a natural first step would be sanitizing their own website. If they don't it's a bit like claiming to be vegetarian and eating fish, or claiming to care for the environment while smoking.

                                          @rakoo @sebastian @Flatus Great information, thank you. I saw something somewhere about the Memories app but couldn't figure out if it fit into the NextCloud world. That sounds like a good solution, both as regards storage and synching images. Thank you for the recommendation and tips.

                                          I use Les Pas on Android to automatically sync, it's smarter than a naive send because it knows what is remote and when I delete a photo it asks me if I want to delete on the phone, on the server of both. It also allows me to do albums by actual folders and not some proprietary thing again, and albums can be shared with nextcloud so others can see and maybe even add photos, etc
