My TrueNAS computer (HP Z420) is beeping non-stop. The TrueNAS interface doesn’t show anything wrong, I’ve rebooted and it’s still beeping. (Maybe I should try a shutdown?)

I don’t know enough about PC hardware to know what’s going on…

@rasterweb there are HP documents available online that can point you in the right direction (HP Beep Codes as a search topic). This is almost certainly a hardware issue and has nothing to do with TrueNas. Good luck! šŸ€

@rasterweb Does it beep also during the power-on self-test, while sitting waiting in the boot loader, or only after the OS and software is up and running?

Is it a continuous sound, or is it repeating beeps interspersed with silence? (Beep-beep-beep-beep or beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee…)

@rasterweb Huh. I would definitely start looking in the direction of beep codes and see if there's a pattern that matches anything documented for the motherboard. Something you *could* try in the meantime is to check all component seating. Maybe there's something that's slightly loose and the system is detecting this? Is there a BIOS intrusion detection setting that needs resetting?

I'm not familiar at all with that system but that's where I would start looking, at least.

@rasterweb check with the HP support page and search for z420 and beep codes

It’s the mainboard trying to talk to you šŸ˜…could be a broken fan or something like that

@oberhamsi @lynze @mkj @terranux Well, I'm a dummy! In my half asleep state I thought the beeping was coming from the NAS, but in reality it was the UPS next to it!

Luckily there is a button to press to turn off the UPS beeping. It shows a battery error, which is worrisome as the UPS isn't even a year old yet.

I wonder if the cold of the basement is causing an issue.

The battery temperature would have to be near freezing, if not below, to cause a problem. It's likely the UPS has detected an actual problem with the battery (low voltage, probably) during one of its regular self-tests.

It's under warranty? Should be good for a replacement battery, and if not warranty, then they're pretty cheap if you do it yourself.
