BREAKING: TikTok's addictive design breaches EU law.

(Features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, highly personalised recommender system.)

The EU is finally drawing a line: TikTok has to turn off their addictive tricks.

We should be in control of our own time & attention, not Big Tech, be it ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ

@AliceStollmeyer To me, the poignant (and repugnant) actuality in this BREAKING NEWS is that the EU intends to allow TikTok (etc.) to keep on keepinโ€™ on. With a few measly twists and turns maybe.

It shouldnโ€™t be โ€œcontinue and please tone down a bitโ€.
It should be โ€œnuh uh, begone! Donโ€™t call back until youโ€™ve repented, done penance and changed your broken ways entirely and then we may consider letting you back in. Shoo!โ€

@js @AliceStollmeyer Probably because Europe still can't afford to do so - barely anyone on the street knows there are open-source alternatives to most social networks, and so cutting them without warning would mean severed connections and people scrambling to reconnect with their audiences.

@kimvsparrentak @alexandrageese @AliceStollmeyer Doesn't this apply to every corporate social media platform though? Like, yeah, I agree that it needs to be reined in, but why only TikTok?

@csolisr @AliceStollmeyer We connected well before enslavement by fascist big tech, and, humans being resilient and resourceful if needs must, will find ways with them gone to keep doing so.

Having nothing beats having a negative.
