I actually purchased a subscription to a streaming platform today...

I've canceled all of my streaming and use the following apps to watch series/movies:
    - Kanopy (free, no ads, uses library card)
    - Hoopla (free, no ads, uses library card)
    - Locally hosted Jellyfin (runs off my laptop connected to wifi - I need to move it to an RPi...) loaded with shows downloaded from Internet Archive (no piracy here, I swear)

(note: I'm considering buying bluerays and ripping them to load into Jellyfin - that might be interesting)

    -------------

I realized I was still watching Youtube. And their ads / algorithm is killing me. A friend had purchased Youtube Premium and I was not impressed.

I further realized all of my favorite content creators have channels on Nebula. No ads, no meaningful algorithm. Just subscribe to the channels you like and watch them there. $6 a month. And the money goes to the creators. The streaming service is creator-owned.

So I get my youtube fix... without youtube.

@tinker I've been a nebula subscriber for a few years and have been thinking of, if/when they do it again, get a life time membership so I don't have to be surprised once a year.

@tinker I can't believe something I heard advertised in a YouTube video is... good?! There's always a first time.

@tinker I mean... The only good thing advertised on YouTube being a alternative that allows you to abandon YouTube is somewhat poetic

I should also add that both uBlock Origin in Firefox and FreeTube still work for YT. No ads.

@tinker If you don't want to share your jellyfin its totally fine to just host it as a LXC via systemD quadlets.

@barrowofdirt - Yeah, assuming $6 a month subscription, it pays for itself in 7 years (8 years and 4 months if you're used to paying annually).

This does not account for price increases in monthly or annual subscriptions in the future and also assumes Nebula will still be around in that time.

Sooo... I'm fine with a monthly fee of $6 as it's my only paid for streaming right now.

@tinker I got grandparented in to a $30/year plan, so 10 years for me. I'll set an alarm for when I next get paid.
Thinking that far into the future is not something I've ever done before. 😄

I use FreeTube - it pulls everything from YT, but no ads and you can download them very easily if you wish.

Also has a subscribing, bookmarking, and multiple-file system if you want to break down into categories - Movies, Food-related, DIY, To Be Watched Later, etc.

An absolute life-saver for me. (I don't have an internet connection, so I can't casually watch movies online.)

@tinker welcome to nebula. Been a subscriber for 2 years.

For YouTube, I use unlock origin to be ad free and subscribe to YouTube channels via RSS in my feedreader to get rid of the algorithm when I don‘t want

Look at automatic ripping machine if you do go the bluray route (and make sure you research drives).
