I just wanted to let you all know that the observer who was kidnapped yesterday (start of this thread) was released safely last night. (I say “kidnapped” not as an exaggeration, but as a fact: no part of that resembled a lawful arrest.) Minor scrapes, more determined than ever. Huge relief.
ICE apparently continues to believe that indefinite detention of observers is not something they can get away with yet. They are still generally releasing observers after many long hours but not days, generally with no proper booking and no charges.
Sadly, this is not the case for people they deem sufficiently brown-skinned to deport.
From that observer who was taken yesterday, shared here with permission, because we could all use a good laugh. (Note: Whipple is the fed bldg that’s ICE’s MSP HQ)

When they let you out of Whipple, they give you back your personal effects (minus your phone). And just send you out the front door with whatever you were wearing when you came in.
So I’m walking out the front door of Whipple, probably looking like an ice agent coming off shift, and pulling all of my random shit out of my bag/dropping it in the snowbank, etc.… And I can hear the protesters at the gate, taunting me… “oh did you drop your phone, you piece of shit?” “You’re TERRIBLE!” “Fucking Nazi!” And I was just loving it, actually. But when I got closer and used my big voice “You assholes are barking up the wrong tree…. These MF’ers just released me!” The crowd went absolutely crazy.❞

Sort of makes sense if they are being told to destroy them and they are lawless, why not profit instead

It's important to understand that the property arbitrarily seized by police, "civil asset forfeiture" adds up to more theft than all burglaries combined. The only heist bigger is wage theft.
You don't have to be convicted or even charged with anything. They'll just take your shit. Like in SF when the non-corporate nightclubs were getting harassed by cops using 40s-era obscenity laws to go after the queer-themed nights. They'd just take the DJ's whole rig. For example. Same goes for the cash under your mattress, when they toss a house "for drugs".
They do it because they know we're not exactly rolling in money (else they'd be taking their orders from us) and it's hard for us to replace that shit. For them it's profitable harassment. Best job ever for greedy bullies who love to make people cry.
Phones have been reappearing after being resold. You know, like how they auction off the cars they seize. Whether it's a personal deal under the table or a whole official process, same evil crap.
