He may be addicted to cocaine, but look at him go! Now that's a productive member of society!

Explanation: The 19th century, in an explosion of technological advancement, created all sorts of brand new compounds and extracts for doctors to use! Like 'cocaine' and 'heroin'!

Surely none of them with positive initial effects would end up being harmful in the long run, would they?

I think the funniest part of his story is when he tried to get off cocaine by going on a sailing trip with only enough cocaine to get him halfway. https://maximumfun.org/episodes/sawbones/sawbones-the-man-behind-the-knick/

Probably had too much blood in their blood. Have to get that blood out.

Step 1: make an ordered list of drugs, ranking from worst to least.
Step 2: get patient addicted to the drug below his current addiction.
Step 3: repeat until you're down to cigarettes
Step 4: tack on a nicotine patch and mail the bill
                  Step 5: profit!

No, it's a research proposal. Once I get funding, I'm going to need enough staff to handle the crowds that volunteer as test subjects.
