The guide to setting up an IRC server is ready! This will take you from zero to a fully operational IRC server (including the Gamja web client, hosted on the same server).

I’ve gone out of my way to keep this super simple, even avoiding the need to open an editor and change any files. I hope you find it useful!
@neatnik was not aware that IRC is still alive

@totentanz Alive and kicking! The Libera network (https://libera.chat) is thriving, and there are tons of smaller independent/private networks that are doing great too. Our own IRC network (for omg.lol) is approaching 300 accounts!

@neatnik Nice, this will be my next weekend project.

@cat Hopefully eventually! The Ergo team hasn’t added multi-server network support (like InspIRCd and Unreal has) but it’s on their roadmap.

@neatnik the ok/not to copy paste is such a nice touch, I doubt I'll ever have a need for this but I'm glad it exists

@neatnik I should look up the status of popular clients sometime. I've often thought in the past that IRC (or xmpp) could have totally been slack/discord if some of the clients had a bit more polish (and maybe support for a pastebin/imagebin baked in)
Enjoying seeing all your various experiments in the old (vintage?
) web.

@neatnik To take advantage of the IRCv3 support in Ergo: Halloy for GUI and Senpai for terminal.

@zrzz And Goguma on mobile!
(Edit: originally just said iOS before I realized it’s on Android too)

@neatnik Oops meant that for another thread but I guess it works here too!
Agreed about Goguma, that's what we use on mobile on my private server. Combined with Ergo's always-on feature and the push-notification and image/audio/file share support it's a first class modern chat experience. -
