When I first saw the news reports about knitting the Melt the Ice hat, I immediately ordered red yarn.

But between the snow/sleet/ice storm and shipping delays, I'm terrified that I won't get the red yarn before another cataclysmic event happens and the entire fiber community moves on to knitting green scarves in solidarity with *whatever* and I'll be that old man in the corner madly trying to finish my red hat.

@jkirkendall @knitting
I'm old enough to not give a f***, I'll knit the red hat even if I'm finishing it in mid summer and am the only person in Germany ever wearing it. -

@jkirkendall Well, at least the hat is based on a historical hat (Norwegian hats protesting Nazi occupation of Norway) and not some passing whim picked by a white designer. That said, I follow at least two people of color who just see them as performative activism in the absence of actual activism. It's a tough call, but I think these hats are going to stick around.

Knit the hat!
It doesn't matter what others move on to; the hat is for YOU, and you know why you will wear it.
And so will most of us.
When I wear my pussy hat, I get thumbs up and smiles - people know why I made it, though I have never met them. None of them recognize my black tube hat, a pattern knit during the war for sailors who might need a watch cap, or a narrow bag, or a scarf, or a towel/rag…
And you may see me knitting, or wearing, my Melt hat, too.

Performative activism of this kind - knitting hats, making whistles - is activism. It’s also performative. That isn’t always bad.
The hats and whistles and etc aren’t going to fix anything. But they’re visible, they’re tangible markers of group membership and solidarity, and they can make other, more direct actions more impactful. And, the people who lean into the whistles and hats are mostly people who won’t or can’t do other things anyway.

@jkirkendall And when I saw the news I immediately thought of you and wondered if you'd be knitting one!
