Some people will do anything for money, or maybe they are just in dire situations. Anyway $50k to join ICE might tempt some people.
Well.
* It's not 50k it's 10k per year for five years. Big difference.
* It is a five year *commitment* bonus. You need to work the full five years OR you must pay it back.
* So if your work for 3 years then quit you owe them 30k! (money you may need for a lawyer)
* The first 10k will be about $6500 after taxes.Just so everyone knows.

@futurebird Folks who might be tempted to sign up ain't likely to pay much attention to them fiddly little details. The work is what's important, not the getting paid, or getting benefits, or whether your longed for ethnostate actually emerges.

@futurebird Oh, is absolutely a scam, just like everything else they do. They want their goons to be financially enslaved to them so they'll keep doing violence even after the social push back makes them start to question their allegiance.

@futurebird It's too bad so many ICE recruits are such terrible people that not even the military wanted them.
Anyone who's served knows from experience that the government doesn't pay up front, or in full. -

@futurebird If they leave before their 5-year commitment, they also have to pay back any hotel stays during their tenure.
And now you know why they put them up at the Hilton. They've sold themselves into indenture.

@futurebird @count_01 please don't gloss over that "dire situations" detail. People can be coerced into doing things completely against their morals.
I'm sure this scheme was designed with that kind of coercion in mind.
The good news about that is that such recruits are much easier to turn... especially if they believe there's a way out.
Let's not waste that leverage by lobbing them all in with the zealots.

They're not doing it for the money, they're doing it out of their love of inflicting terror and violence on others

@futurebird and... AND ... if ICE ceases to exist before the five years are up... no bonus for anyone. Which i suspect they are planning. Then a relaunch under a new name if Republicans win again. Or nothing if Democrats win

I was in Guatemala once 20+ years ago, and as our bus pulled into the city my partner and I were going to stay in, the road was blocked by some kind of protest. Being the kind of people who are interested in that kind of thing, we followed up later to find out what the demonstration was about.
It turns out that it was an organization of former soldiers who had participated in the genocidal war on the country's mostly indigenous population a few decades earlier. They were pissed that they weren't getting the full pensions and benefits they were promised for participating in the slaughter.
The US isn't 1980s Guatemala (not yet, at least), but I can well imagine a time in the future when today's ICE agents take to the streets to vent their anger not that Trump conned them, but that some future, post-conflict government isn't moving fast enough to pay them what they thought they would get paid, rather than what their contracts actually said. They will never accept that it's their own hero who screwed them.

@futurebird what happens to the "bonus" if ICE is shut down? Aren't they really getting cash to make sure that government doesn't change.

@futurebird I know that some are in dire financial circumstances, but, $10,000 per year for 5 years, and you have to target the innocent? Oh hell no...

@futurebird The only ones that I can see joining, are racists, or hate filled people. You know the type that hate the world, for their shortcomings?

I seem to have heard this one before. Faust, selling his soul to the devil.
Marlowe (almost)
Faust (in America):
How comes it then that thou art now out of hell with me?Mefistofele:
Why, this is hell, nor am I out of it.Β -

@iwein @futurebird If a bad lot in life convinces you that burning down the country that produced it is a good use of your day, I'm not going to waste mine respectfully differing. I'm going to spit on you and everyone you chose to follow, and you can find pity elsewhere.

@vivtek @futurebird do you have a source on that? I tried searching and only found folks claiming it without a source.

@futurebird Iβm sure they take the 50k out of the DHS budget the minute the new hire signs on the line, and then they put it somewhere for safe keeping for five years, like a bank account in Qatar

@futurebird i'm genuinely convinced this exists specifically to bring on stupid people. no sane person would ever take a job for a bonus that you have to pay back if you don't work over five years. they're weeding out the potentially okay people because they want ICE to be dominated by bumbling fools, after all they're easier to control and will take whatever order you give -

@futurebird As usual the government promise of easy money, isn't. But since it obviously isn't targeted at the brightest of people, it's effective.
