โชIt is rather beautiful here in Oulu
, right now. Absolutely no filters needed at all ๐ค
-20ยฐC, wind chill -28ยฐC.This is one of our main cycling and walking routes (#8) and here we have a 5 km stretch with ZERO at-grade crossings with motor traffic. I repeat, it's physically impossible to meet any motor traffic here. So it is very peaceful, safe and comfortable to ride and walk completely uninterrupted. Just bliss.
@pekkatahkola I have to sort out flights, hotel etc and visit Oulu. Maybe December/January.

@pekkatahkola The temperature may be -20ยฐC, but wind chill is not measured in ยฐC. It's just -28. -

@mike Wind chill isnโt a physical air temperature and canโt be measured with a thermometer, thatโs true. But itโs defined as an equivalent temperature: the air temperature in calm conditions that would cause the same rate of heat loss from exposed skin. Because of that, itโs still expressed in degrees (ยฐC or ยฐF), even though itโs an index rather than a direct measurement.

@pekkatahkola Not according to eg Environment Canada: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/environment/weather/severeweather/wind-chill-index.html and any other text I have consulted. Wind chill and humidex are both unitless. -

Beautiful photos!
I often cite Oulu as an example when people argue that year-round bicycle infrastructure isn't viable in Thunder Bay.
There are some interesting parallels between our cities. We're not on the ocean but have an ocean-going port, often with 5-6 'salties' at anchor waiting to load wheat or potash mostly; we're a regional hub a long way from our provincial and national capitals; and, have similar temperatures and seasons.
I really hope to visit Oulu one day!

@corvus Thank you, and welcome! It would also be interesting for me to visit Thunder Bay some day

There is a large Finnish population in Thunder Bay, you would probably feel right at home (except for the terrible cycling infrastructure).
I've shared some of these pictures here before but thought I would post them again.

@corvus Thanks! That's heartwarming, all that heritage looks like a little piece of home there far away ๐ฅฐ Iโd absolutely love to visit Thunder Bay one day (and maybe help the city to improve their cycling infrastructure and maintenance while Iโm there
