after seeing how the creaking overloaded matrix dot org server caused some friends to be completely unable to create and share Spaces or see Rooms in the ones I created on my server, I'm starting to suspect where the complaints are coming from

Please don't use that server, it is way overcrowded and this WILL lead to issues. Here's a list of servers that should work: https://servers.joinmatrix.org/
Also happy to explain to anyone how to selfhost one with e.g Tuwunel (a fast Matrix server)

hot take: if you make "unable to decrypt message" jokes and if all you ever used was the matrix dot org server you hereby forfeit all of the RAM in your pc.
The cache is several times more than the 384kb that "ought to be enough for everybody", just like a single matrix server ought to be enough for everybody, right?
and if you make the joke but never used Matrix before you hereby forfeit your entire PC, because clearly you don't need a PC to participate in the usage of it

@anthropy what's the process / requirements like for self hosting a server? out of curiosity, since i haven't really messed with anything out of NFSN and that's strictly webhosting

@anthropy Oh, I'm one of those people who have been stuck on matrix.org for ages because I was under the impression that the only meaningful options are Synapse (which seemed like a pain to host for a small installation) and Dendrite (which seemed like permanently lagging behind/stuck in alpha).
Any downsides with running Tuwunel in your experience? How well does it track the spec/interoperate with Synapse?

@blaurascon not much, it depends on how much people and how much media and such you intend to host. my server with a little over a dozen people uses like 100-300mb RAM, and that's Synapse which is notoriously heavy compared to the Rust based Tuwunel

@blaurascon as for how to: you run one of the server softwares with a db (there are containers for this), a client like element or schildichat, and make sure you have your .well-known/matrix/* folder set up correctly on the root of your domain so discovery and federation works (basically just a short bit of yaml/json)

@23n27 I've personally hosted Synapse for years so I don't know specifically how much worse Tuwunel is, but the process for hosting it appears very similar; you set up the server and a webbased client, and you make sure your .well-known/matrix/* responses are set up correctly for client autodiscovery and server federation (basically just a small json file). it's a bit more involved if you want video/voice calls because you need a TURN and webRTC server and such, but still doable tbh
