      i have a good friend who lived in SF for many years and now lives in monterey. when she was back in SF she was just standing in the most 'normal' scenes to me (among all the screaming cantonese aunties of chinatown) and she was like.. i really.. needed this back in my life.

      when i spent half my time in monterey, i definitely felt very disconnected from that part of my life (language, food, people)

      i don't think i can live in that environment again

        @skinnylatte

        Oh I didn't realize they're at the same time this year.

        The area between Bay Ridge and Sunset Park where restaurants have their signs in Arabic and Chinese has got to be absolutely wild right now

          @skinnylatte it’s why, even though the west coast sounds wonderful, i cannot fathom living in a USA place without a majority of Puerto Ricans and Carib people. we set the tone wherever we live as majorities and that makes it easier to live in a hostile environment.

            @blogdiva @skinnylatte being boricua in the west coast hits different. We get extremely excited when we run into each other and we find ways to experience the joy of where we come from, but the isolation is real and I miss it terribly.

              @zkat @skinnylatte yeah, the times i’ve been there it felt very foreign to me; but not in a good way, like in another country. we portorros ―and i include nuyoricans― really aren't part of this culture the way Mexican Americans and Chicanos are.

                  @zkat @blogdiva I can see that! I feel like I would have an equivalent experience on both coasts but there are also slight differences in the west vs east coast Chinese experience

                    @gbargoud @skinnylatte also Lent starts right after Mardi Gras.

                    When I lived in coastal Alabama, Mardi Gras wasn't a one day event. It was a whole season of parades and parties that start right after the Christmas/New Year holiday season. And arguably more important. Mardi Gras was the ending.
