Researchers at the World Health Organisation researchers have concluded that over a third of cancer(s) are caused by infections, lifestyle choices & environmental pollutants, and are therefore (relatively) easily preventable....

So, we now know how we can massage down the costs of cancer treatment for the NHS, but this sort of preventative public health strategy has *always* been under funded, so don't hold your breath for any real movement on this...

@ChrisMayLA6 We’ve spent the last century and a half living in a toxic soup, from anilines to pfas.

@ChrisMayLA6 Actually, public health used to dominate health budgets. Only after WWII did medicine take prime slot.

The Victorian sanitation boards were a public health system which invested heavily in crucial public health measures such as sewage disposal and clean water supply. Social housing was also administered a health measure.

Most of the great advances in public health have been achieved by engineers rather than doctors.

The reporting seems to be high on the lifestyle choices (smoking and drinking) but less mention given to environmental pollutants.

It’s much easier to point the finger at individuals for their downfall than the impact of a whole host of chemical toxins and microplastics that we’ve been subject to over last 100 years.

I would love to do research project looking at correlations between social housing and health. Long term tenancies over decades against reported illness.

It’s rare to hear that a celebrity has died of lung cancer these days. It’s equally rare to see lung cancer or any lung related complaints listed on tenants records. And I don’t think this is entirely just down to people giving up smoking in recent years - many older folks smoked for decades. I think it’s the stigma and assumption all lung complaints are linked to smoking.

But this conveniently hides the impact of air pollution, asbestos and mould ridden homes.

@JugglingWithEggs @ChrisMayLA6 Particulates from car tyres. 💀 Not going away with the introduction of EVs.

@JugglingWithEggs @ChrisMayLA6 @kbm0 unless total mileage or size of vehicle decreases then tyre particulate pollution will actually increase with the switch to EVs as they are heavier than their fossil fueled equivalents.

This is true - and it’s why I want to see journeys reduce, as well as total number of vehicles reduce.

Good public transport with pedestrian and cycle friendly roads/pavements are the way forward long term.

But I think we also need to consider very carefully where we locate new builds. We need facilities in walking distance.

Sadly all the new build estates sprouting up near where I live are blighted by being located within sneezing distance of a dual carriage way, with the assumption that you need to join the traffic to buy a pint of milk.
