I was thinking: what if a channel steals images and audio not from another Yotoube channel, but from another site?

How can a person defend their identity?

Done. That’s been happening to a couple of other folks I follow. I hope some European sovereign video platform arises as an alternative and I hope it has strict prohibitions against AI impersonation of human beings.

@randahl @elCelio I respect your position, but I suspect a deeper anaysis would reveal that the incentives favour a total pivot to generative AI content, and I fear the tipping point is far closer than we think. I am terribly ignorant, tho wide strokes and public information appear to paint a picture of current and past media harvest to supplant with purchased narrative and low-risk scam. It's burning hot at both ends of the fuze. Not enuf room to expound upon, thank goodness, eh?

In any case though, this is a worrying development. This flooding the zone -type propaganda probably even makes commercial sense. The youtube algorithm probably funnels users to these deepfake channels free of charge!

I don't even trust the view or engagement numbers either at this point. Literally most of the new content is slop, and more and more viewers and comments are bots and YouTube just doesn't care their platform is basically a wasteland now. It totally feels like trying to use Yahoo Chat rooms in the early 2000s.

How much longer is this sustainable? I really feel bad for creators who have become dependent on YouTube for their livelihood.

Youtube just showed me fake Yanis Varoufakis the other day - not that I’d watch him, since the Russian invasion - and being unprepared it took me a while to realise that it wasn’t the person reading some weird press release but an AI clickbaity impersonation.
We need to escape those crap suggesting algorithms!

An additional element of this attack may be that if a significant number of people block (from inside or outside the YT system) an impersonator, that may be interpreted as unwillingess to view similar content i.e. the original being impersonated, downgrading their ranking. Not sure to what degree this would work, though.
