On This Day, 25 January 1995, Eric Cantona performed his famous Kung-Fu kick on nazi Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons. Simmons already had convictions for violent assault and was a BNP and NF supporter.

Cantona has since said his only regret was not hitting him harder.@ginger_tosser I avoided sports news for many years and didn't know much about him, til he presented a fascinating series on AlJazeera about ten years back, "Football Rebels" - about footballers who stood up for human rights and democracy (often at great cost to themselves). I found the ones on Socrates and Caszely particularly moving.

I was living in Manchester at the time. The lady next to me at work had a 7 year old grandson who was a City fan. One day she sees him with a United cap and asks him if he's changed sides. His reply: "no but now that I know Cantona can do Kung Fu, I like them a little." -
