@JonChevreau the employees pulled their resources they could buy the paper. Then people would be willing to get their subscriptions back and the paper would thrive.

Subscriptions and advertising are fine.
Paywalls limit shareability and discourage readership. I won't share an article with a paywall and I'll either got o archive.is if I want to read it and don't have a subscription, or not bother reading it.
I think all they do is hurt the readability of papers and discourage their revenue, if anything.
