"Humanity faces ‘devastating domino effects’ including mass displacement and financial ruin as planet warms.

The #TippingPoints at risk include the collapse of big #IceSheets in Greenland and the West Antarctic, the widespread thawing of #permafrost, the death of #CoralReefs in warm waters, and the collapse of one oceanic current in the North Atlantic."

"The tipping point report also looked at what it called “positive #TippingPoints”, such as the plummeting price of #RenewableEnergy and the growth in sales of #ElectricVehicles. It found that such shifts do not happen by themselves but need to be enabled by stimulating innovation, shaping markets, regulating business, and educating and mobilising the public."

"“Policy-makers need to think systemically and look for those leverage points where small interventions can make a big difference,” says Powell.

But triggering one positive #TippingPoint can sometimes help trigger others, like dominoes, he says. For instance, the adoption of electric vehicles is bringing down battery prices, which then makes it feasible to use batteries to back up the intermittent electricity supply from renewable sources."

"Crossing Earth system #TippingPoints would have “catastrophic” impacts on societies, with the potential to “escalate violent conflicts, mass displacement and financial instability”, the report also warns.

The authors say that promoting “positive social tipping points” in socio-behavioural, technological, economic and political systems is “the only realistic systemic risk governance option” to limit the risks.

Many #PositiveTippingPoints have already been crossed"

"#TippingPoints have often become synonymous with climate collapse. But for scientists researching how societies can achieve sustainable change with today's knowledge and technology, tipping points can also be positive.

Societies can introduce social changes that would help bring about a rapid green transition."

Tipping points can have positive as well as negative consequences.

"We need policymakers to implement policies that bring forward the positive tipping points we need to stop greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the bad climate tipping points. If the EU and China were to coordinate, it could be enough to shift the balance towards clean green alternatives."

"Last week, hundreds of scientists, policymakers and journalists flocked to the University of Exeter to attend an international conference on “tipping points”.

Attendees also explored “positive #TippingPoints” – large-scale, self-propelling social changes that would reduce the impact of humans on the climate."

"The world is closer than thought to a “point of no return” after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped, scientists have said.

The public and politicians are largely unaware of the risk of passing the point of no return. The group said they were issuing their warning because while rapid and immediate cuts to fossil fuel burning were challenging, reversing course was likely to be impossible once on the path to a hothouse Earth."

"The risks we describe are troubling not only for their magnitude but also for their uncertainty. We do not yet know the exact thresholds for many tipping elements, or how quickly tipping cascades might unfold. Evidence nevertheless shows that overshooting 1.5°C or even the current temperatures increases their probability. Uncertainty about where tipping thresholds lie is therefore not a reason for delay, but a compelling reason for immediate precautionary action."
