@astrid I’m so sorry, A and AAAA are both in current usage.

@jalager OK, I had no idea the single A battery was a thing.

Also, it's really funny that this battery is apparently so uncommon that they didn't have an actual photo to use on the Wikipedia page for battery sizes so they just drew a 2D representation of it on a piece of graph paper.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes#/media/File:A-concept.jpg

@sysop408 @kwayk42 @astrid Indeed! I THINK I remember them being around in Sweden in the 80s or 90s but I can't swear on it. I'm sure I haven't seen one in decades though.

@astrid AAAA is also a battery! Very uncommon but you can still get some if you know where to look for em! 9V batteries sometimes have six cells slightly smaller than AAAA inside of them, too.

since we're all picking nits here, AAA is also an automobile club.

but seriously, packing cylinders like that should be illegal. This is basically maximising the amount of air you can sell to a customer.

@mattdm yeah that brings up so many questions. So few things use AAAA batteries that most people don't even know they exist.

On the other hand, 9V batteries aren't at all uncommon yet manufacturers will often make 6 AAAA batteries first and then use those to make a single 9V? Wouldn't it be more efficient to make the 9V directly and make fewer AAAA's?

This has been bugging me ever since I learned this.

The chemistry gives 1.5 volts. To make 9 volts, you need six cells in series anyway, though you could use other methods to separate them.

@leeloo ah! OK, now I've got the opposite question. If they're doing it like this because of the chemistry, how do the ones that don't use 6 AAAA batteries do it? Are they just making 6 flat cells packed into a rectangle instead of cylinders?

On the other hand, German speaking countries and areas that got their music theory from Germany tend to use H for the B key, so you can add musical note for H.

tl;dr The manufacturing process for making layers of things in rolls was already well-established for other things. Now even more so, so there's not any real incentive to retool for something else.

@leeloo ah! OK, now I've got the opposite question. If they're doing it like this because of the chemistry, how do the ones that don't use 6 AAAA batteries do it? Are they just making 6 flat cells packed into a rectangle instead of cylinders?

Interesting question, the people who have taken those apart would know.

I'm pretty sure lead acid car batteries put plastic walls between the cells (that chemistry gives 2 volts, so also needs six cells for the 12 volts).
