It is so profoundly strange to experience my country, Denmark, being threatened by The United States — especially when you think of how much Americans and Danes have in common.

We both fought fascism in World War 2, we both have a constitution which defines a liberal democracy, and in both countries the greatest threat to that liberal democracy is Donald Trump.

@randahl 95% of American people have no issues with either Denmark or Greenland.

This is strictly another case of the Trump administration being alone in promoting this idea. It's bullying:

a.) Goading: It makes US domestic opposition feel like they have no influence over public policy and are powerless.

b.) Robbery: It involves theft of minerals (latest robber-baron pet hobby) and brazen violation of sovereignty

c.) Terrorism: It introduces the threat of withdrawing the USA from NATO.

@dcdeejay @randahl there is a significant education problem in our country. The powers that be want it that way, because ignorant groups are easier to control with fear. I hate it.

@elCelio please don't forget that 85,000 Danish resistance fighters fought the Nazis for 5 long years.

@randahl @elCelio tbf i think most Danes are ashamed of that particular part of ww2, the shortness of the fight. But when that's said, please consider: we managed to save 95% of the Danish Jews from the Holocaust, and as Randahl stated: just because our politicians waved the white flag very quickly did not mean the Nazis did not have a lot of problems with the populace sabotaging them as often as they could manage.

@randahl @elCelio my father's father was a young boy then; the Nazis had barn to which they drove confiscated hay in horse drawn wagons.

The boys made sport of slipping unto the loads, and striking a match, just to roll off before the drivers noticed the arsen.

@randahl Most Americans would rather forget that the Nazis held a huge rally in NY Madison Square Garden in 1939, and that there were several Nazi-oriented summer youth camps in Wisconsin - actually, across several states! - before we joined WW2.

@randahl The world has changed since the twentieth century. Europe now faces a new geopolitical reality.

Where the transatlantic bond was once the cornerstone of security and stability, we now see the United States itself struggling with internal polarisation and unpredictable foreign policy.

Europe, with over 450 million inhabitants and one of the largest economies in the world, is a global player and must now shape its future as an independent global force.

@randahl @mastodonmigration What @heidilifeldman said. I’m a Boomer, born and raised in the post-WWII era. When I was a kid, Hitler and Tojo were fresh in people’s memory, and so civics, aimed at inculcating the tenets of democracy in kids, was a core part of education. In recent decades, um, not so much. In fact, it’s not prominent or nonexistent in most educational standards. We’re now suffering the consequences. It’s just awful.

                                        🤷🏻‍♂️

@randahl @phloggen It’s extra surreal as a Dane living in the U.S. Maybe it’s time to go home 😅

@randahl Most Americans would rather forget that the Nazis held a huge rally in NY Madison Square Garden in 1939, and that there were several Nazi-oriented summer youth camps in Wisconsin - actually, across several states! - before we joined WW2.

The cynic in me wants to point out that the US joined the war to fight the Japanese, not Nazis.
