Here I stand, a tiny human, at the root wad of maybe the biggest drift log I've seen, a gargantuan Sitka spruce. It's been lodged in the sand of First Beach at La Push for several years. The beast undoubtedly came down on high flows one of the rivers of the Olympic rain forests. My sweetie took the pic. #ThickTrunkTuesday #AltText

@sarae Itโ€™s impressive. Saw a drift log at Kalaloch South Beach Campground once that was maybe as big, smaller root wad but thicker trunk, as I recall. Quite awhile ago.

@GPJohnston ๐Ÿ˜Ž That is amazing. I went to La Push in 2009 (my daughter and my wife both were Twilight fans) and I don't think that was there. In general, the amount of timber that gets washed ashore in the PNW is astounding. I can remember walking along a beach on Vancouver Island decades ago that had literally hundreds of trucks piled on shoreโ€”the ones the timber industry couldn't fish out of the river in time. They since all been recovered.

@Brad_Rosenheim safe to say the tree lived at least a couple hundred years, but the life span of Sitka spruce is less than 500 years.
