@rasterweb we have an "old" washing machine that I have repaired numerous times. Each time we discuss getting a new one, but I know how to diagnose, disassemble, and repair this one. Replacement parts are still available. I have not heard good things about new ones.
@jasoncoon Sometimes the new things offer improvements but you often pay a price when it comes to repairs or replacement parts.
I have an electric toothbrush (recommended by my dentist) that has a bad power button but no screws to open the case. Sigh…

true for pretty much everything. & if you hear people saying things like “I don’t buy previously worn shoes (etc) because they might have athletes foot (etc) in them” are being very nasty & offensive. (Unless you’re just a germaphobe & don’t want to touch other humans, that’s different). You can simply put rags soaked in Lysol in the shoe for a couple days if you’re feeling uncomfortable with it, it’s really not a serious problem. -

@rasterweb @jasoncoon I changed the gear case oil in my old washing machine. Probably totally unnecessary, but I had opened it up trying to diagnose a problem with it blowing breakers. It turned out to be a switch that had failed so both high and low speed turned on at the same time.
Keep that old machine going!

Still gets 8 to 9 hours on battery!Also, my old ass station wagon.. No tracking, HAS FUCKING KNOBS FOR FUCK SAKE
, the subscription for my heated seats is $0.00, and if the check engine comes on I have the freedom to decide if sitting on the side of the highway is worse than risking engine damage. -

My partner drives a 2019 RAV4 and it has cameras and sensors and beeps like fucking crazy every time we pull out of the garage.
I actually use an old phone as my "car audio player".
The one thing I do really like in the 2019 is the adaptive cruise control which would come in handy with my current leg pain situation.
But yeah, I like knobs and no warning beeps.

@jasoncoon @rasterweb The place I live at has "new" washer and dryer. OMFG I HATE THAT FUCKING WASHER AND DRYER! All it does is bitch! ...and I have a deep seething resentment for that little fucking song it sings! It's like it's mocking me for having to deal with it failing to drain! ...and why TF do newer washers stink so damn bad?! I had an old top loader in my 20s, that I never remembered to clean. It never stank. This thing gets cleaned, still makes me gag.

@hellomiakoda With the leg pain I suffer from it can be very painful to use the accelerator pedal so adaptive cruise it a good solution for that.

@farah @hellomiakoda I haven't driven for weeks due to pain but on my first drive this week I was going 25mph in a 25mph zone (a parkway) and a large SUV flew around me (it's just a two lane road) and hey, guess who I caught up to at the next stoplight.

@jasoncoon @rasterweb I have a similar story with our dishwasher! I was very surprised how easy it was to get all kinds of replacement parts for this machine that’s older than 10 years now.

@jasoncoon @rasterweb I continue driving my ancient ford. I'm not really a mechanic, and its pretty reliable, but the last time it broke down I was able to diagnose it and replace the alternator for ~$100.
Modern cars scare me, when I pop my hood I can actually see the stuff and how its connected!

I'm still driving a 1999 Jeep Wrangler I bought new, a 2003 Honda S2000 I bought new, and a 2012 Ford F350 I bought used in 2015. Buy good stuff and take care of it and it should serve you forever. (But I sure do wish the Jeep had Bluetooth. 🤪)
