@therivercrow I mean, it does specifically say it collects that information *if the user provides it*.. i.e. in a video they’ve made. I always assumed they were collecting that tbh. It recommends videos based on the ones you’ve already watched so it has to know something about the content of that video. IMO this isn’t really new it’s just more explicit.

@punkfairie @therivercrow Might well be that a lawyer would advise any Fediverse instance provider to include exactly the same language in their terms of service. If we happen to disclose those information on here, it may happen that it is processed in some way or the other, e.g., send to other instances, shown publicly, …

Does not mean that TikTok won't do something more nefarious with what they have now that they have this tech-oligarch-controlled US branch, but outrage about terms of service is always a bit old.

I'm not on the tiktok but if you are, delete it.

New ToS gives permission for it to track citizenship status, religious beliefs, mental health diagnosis, sexual orientation and if you're trans.

It's a surveillance tool. Get rid of it.

      @therivercrow

This does not say that Tiktok "tracks" this information, only that they will have and store this information if you give it to them via a survey or by putting it into a comment.

Like, if you write "I am trans and an immigrant" into a comment on *any* social media platform, that social media platform is going to store and process that string into their database. Obviously.

These ToS are only pointing this out explicitly.

@therivercrow Like - this is utterly baseless fearmongering based on the fact that most people don't even try to parse anything mildly legalese.

@therivercrow Now, if you do not trust TikTok to handle your gender identity or immigration status with the sensitivity it requires, you probably should not disclose it to them, especially not in one of their customer surveys (which you can just not participate in).

@therivercrow It's not that you are wrong, but I think all these data brokers know everything there is to know about all of us, and it would be trivial for them to create lists of undesirables when they decide to, and no deleting a single all will change that.

hopefully thats just doomerism and not quite true, but idk

@caitp @therivercrow Take a look at who owns the US version of tiktok - I doubt it would be trivial of them to create lists of 'undesireables' - it could be done with AI in seconds, and maybe combined with data from other sources to build up a detailed record of any user they chose to target 😔.

@therivercrow It's been there since 2024. That doesn't make the app any less shit or concerning given the current state of the US, but it's not new.

@ratsnakegames @therivercrow it doesn't give a method of collection, there is nothing in this which would prevent them from looking at your overall interactions with the platform and deducing traits which you have.

We know from Facebook and Amazon disclosures that that sort of information can reveal a lot more than people think it can.

So, no, it's not just surveys. If you have interacted with the platform near a gay club a few times, they can use that. If you scroll tiktok on your breaks at the abortion clinic, they can use and disclose that.

Data mining is a profession for a reason, and the reason.

@mu @therivercrow This section is about the term "Data YOU PROVIDE".

And no, of course it does not state a method of collection, because OP has just truncated it to, like, one out-of-context snippet.

@mu @therivercrow I know that data mining exists and can be very revealing, but this is about a specific section of the ToS, and that section proves ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

That's what makes this baseless fearmongering.
