    Speaker on stage in the Social Web room at FOSDEM 2026 is arguing for open-source Fediverse projects to do product-development.

    Although he is framing it in terms of building for a community.

    I agree with him. Although, I think it is true of open-source projects in general.

    (For completeness — others have said that, too.)

      @reiver I'd just like to say: dear people with product management experience, you're welcome to contribute to my projects. Until then, I'm doing my best.

        @mariusor @reiver  I kind of feel the same way. what does this even mean in the context of open source? tbh for me it creates a lot of expectations that are maybe out of sync with reality.

        to be fair, I come from the old school of open source which is more I’m scratching an itch of my own and sharing vs. open source as some kind of business model or community model.

          @mariusor @reiver  (rereading your post it’s now clear you/they are talking about the latter so apologies  for not reading more carefully)

            @toddsundsted @reiver yes, that's a very good distinction.

            Personally I am also in the camp of "scratching my own itch" kind of development... probably that's what made me comment.

            And because there's a strong distinction between the two types of open-source efforts, when you address an audience with advice like that, you need to strongly qualify which you're addressing.
