I'm curious about a lifestyle standard so I am going to make a poll. I didn't realize that vegans normally do not eat honey. I understand why meat, dairy, and by products are avoided, but the bees aren't being harmed harvesting honey and there's plenty of honey left for them over winter, if you're a responsible beekeeper. I actually bend over backwards do all I can for my bees.
So I'm curious how many people that identify as vegan or don't that eat honey or don't eat honey?

Honey is the winter food for adult bees. Adult bees only need carbohydrates, the sugar in honey, to survive and produce heat -

We try to offset that by providing as many native pollinators the plants they crave. We're also hobbyist.If commercial beekeeping stopped today it would probably crash agriculture, maybe not forever, but short term for sure. A lot of stuff is pollinated by kept bees.

@That_One_Guy@mastodon.world yes, I know the use of pesticides and the mineralization of the soil force the use of honey bees, moving the nests near the crops and all that, because there are no pollinators near where we need them. But that's just a patch and it's blocking the return and recovery of native pollinators.
I am in no way saying we should get rid of honey bees right now, I just want to say that we should be taking steps towards not depending on them and recovering healthy local insect populations before it's too late. Also most crops go to feed farm animals, so...
From what you said I think your bees are more like pets and you even say you try to compensate providing more flowering plants, not the absolute best for the ecosystem, but what pet is (look at cats lol). Beekeeping in general and consuming honey... Commercial honey is bad news.
There's a great difference in scale.
I'm not sure if I'm making much sense because I'm having a "bad time" right now, so please excuse me for blabbering so much.

@That_One_Guy I'm a vegan who does not eat honey just because it is an entirely non-essential product for me and one of the easiest to live without. I have been vegan for over 10 years. I never used much honey before and haven't had the need to research a justifiable source of it since. Definitely an interesting thread and discussion here!
