Defending #Greenland in case of military aggression from the USA is often reduced to the complexities of Art. 5 NATO. But there is a similar rule for EU member states, that will be automatically triggered without NATO but demands the same commitments as given to NATO for EU members that are also NATO members.

Article 42(7) of the Treaty on European Union (TEU)

@jwildeboer I've I've been an advocate for a common EU military for decades.

Same as with The Federal States of Europe.

    It's time.

@jwildeboer Greenland famously left the EU after a referendum in 1982. Not being an EU member is a big part of Greenlandic political identity.

This rule will obviously become very relevant when Ukraine joins the EU. And one can build a NATO-less defence strategy on it if the political will is strong enough.

@jwildeboer Sure, another part of the Kingdom of Denmark (Denmark mainland) is an EU member. But that doesn’t make it true for Greenland. The Greenlandic demand for a referendum to leave the EU was a trigger for the events that lead to home rule in Greenland. Ignoring that would not be very popular with Greenlanders.

@jwildeboer Does this require politicians with a backbone? Because I can see that being a problem…

@jwildeboer I hope that an entirely independent Greenland would reconsider things and join the EU at some point in the future. But it’s not political reality.

@jwildeboer So, unless Trump bombs Copenhagen, I don’t see how the EU defense clause would be triggered.

@jwildeboer It’s comparable to how Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are members of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and let the Netherlands call the shots on foreign policy and defense, but are not EU members.

Not sure anyone will honour those obligations. To wit: the genocide convention in contemporaneous history.

@jwildeboer Ok, but what is actually forcing our Dear Leaders to *actually* follow those rules?
What do they lose if they don't follow it?
                          Do they go to prison?

Unrealistic in my eyes, maybe a Icelandlike status might be the better solution. (maybe for Canada as well?)
Until then tripwire forces (NATO, but not US) would probably be the best bet...

@johl @jwildeboer I still think it is a lost opportunity that St. Maarten is not a special municipality and in the EU. We would have had an internal EU/Schengen French-Dutch border!
