@Iveyline It's a great campaign. I was sort-of making moves, but this strengthened my resolve to take the final steps to (first target) fully get off the last bits off Microsoft.

@johnlorimer Agreed. I think we are. It feels like there's momentum now. Including in Denmark, where the threats to Greenland have made opposition to US dominance and behaviour a casual topic of of normal everyday conversation.

@CiaraNi Very good move. Just last week I found a completely unused #Microsoft One app on my computer and deleted it. For those still on #Windows, there's a nifty tool I have seen on social media a week ago to** remove all the intrusive eeew yuck of AI from the computer** (usual warning about running scripts from the internet unchecked apply) https://github.com/zoicware/RemoveWindowsAI I am not affiliated or otherwise in contact with the developer, other than bowing in awe

        #removeAI #removeWindowsAI #dumpmicrosoft

@ar1 It's bananas that we have all been put in this defensive position, battling an onslaught of unwanted features and data grabs. But excellent that some developers are taking up the battle to resist it.

@CiaraNi #danmarkskifter is a fantastic idea, but isn't it contradictory that their website, directly or indirectly, has trackers? Two (2) found by Privacy Badger and Ublock Origin.

Tracking is bad. If they want us to leave big tech, a natural first step would be sanitizing their own website. If they don't it's a bit like claiming to be vegetarian and eating fish, or claiming to care for the environment while smoking.

@arosano I think I'm the wrong person to ask. I don't know anything about their website set-up. And I'm wary of purity tests, especially when people are trying to start a community movement.

I use Les Pas on Android to automatically sync, it's smarter than a naive send because it knows what is remote and when I delete a photo it asks me if I want to delete on the phone, on the server of both. It also allows me to do albums by actual folders and not some proprietary thing again, and albums can be shared with nextcloud so others can see and maybe even add photos, etc

@Su_G @CiaraNi @Pepijn in some degoogle thread in Spanish someone recently suggested this tysk/finsk server based cloud.1 Tb costs less than 4 €/month & it can even be shared. I use syncthing to sync different folders between mobile, laptop, personal and work computers. Unison for manual sync among pcs and rsync (ssh based) for backing up staff. If/when i try this storage I can describe it as ex.in case someone finds it useful to remove google one or Ms subscriptions...

@CiaraNi I did exactly this not long ago, I had already migrated to proton mail and all my photos are stored in a repurposed dell PC turned into a server, 6 TB of storage is more than enough for a family of 3, the only thing i need to do is delete my Microsoft account, once i have updated my online accounts to my proton email address is bye bye MSfT , my google account has a fake name so i dont care about that one, no contacts on google, no photos on google photos. All in my private server now.

@593 Snap - this sounds so similar to my steps off Big Tech. I never used Google actively either, just there as Forced Google features on my Android phone and I turned off everything I could find already. So that will be a simpler disconnect after I've taken the last few steps off Microsoft. We're getting there, all of us!.

@CiaraNi Cool! Here in Germany a similar campaign started recently. Focusing on every first Sunday and suggestions framed as recipes. https://di.day/category/rezepte/ (in german, but foran impression). It would be interesting to compare the developments.

It's not a Broligarch start-up. It's a community-based movement that is driven, as far as I know, a lot by volunteer efforts. They are trying to create a momentum to make people aware of the problems with Big Tech and to help them move off it in manageable steps. They are creating community energy. I don't feel a need to drain that energy by nitpicking at them.

’Denmark Switches.’ A national campaign to collectively move off Big Tech. March 20th is Big Switch Day. I’ve named my goal now. I’m already almost deMicrosofted, except for my photo archive. I moved to Libre & Tuta mail and have been purging photos as I await the release of Tuta drive. Now I’m committing myself to just get the photos off OneDrive and on to my computer, that I own, in my house, by March 20th. Then I’ll delete Microsoft. Then I’ll boast about it on the Fediverse.

@CiaraNi so because it is a community effort it is ok to use the same methods as big tech? In my book that is wrong.

@CiaraNi @Pepijn @Su_G Although you won't have a dedicated app, but you need to use any app which can work with webdav or ssh/sftp. In my case, I only use software using ssh/sftp so it sounds perfect to me. When I get it I will write a toot although it can take me some time (I won't do it before some deadlines...). But I have an idea of how I will organize my staff complimentary to what i am doing right now...

Before I could pick my 2026 goal for #DanmarkSkifter, I did a digital status. I was mildly surprised when I saw my 2025 digital changes together. I looked at the list and thought: ’Tell me you hang out in the Fediverse without telling me you hang out in the Fediverse.’

                                  From Outlook to Tuta
                                  From Office to Libre
From MS Authenticator to Ente Authenticator
                                  From Google Play to F-Droid
                                  From Spotify to AntennaPod
                                  From Firefox to Vivaldi
                                  From DuckDuckGo to NoAIDuckDuckGo
                                  And I bought a back-up drive.

@johnlorimer Agreed. I think we are. It feels like there's momentum now. Including in Denmark, where the threats to Greenland have made opposition to US dominance and behaviour a casual topic of of normal everyday conversation.

@CiaraNi I have been procrastinating for so long, so your toot is good motivation.

@CiaraNi so because it is a community effort it is ok to use the same methods as big tech? In my book that is wrong.

@arosano @CiaraNi I don't think I understand your objection. Is analyzing web logs "wrong"? Or is employing a third-party to do the analytics you find objectionable? Fwiw, big tech rarely uses third parties, they have the capability to do it in house.

If we're going to poison the well with "big tech does it so its bad", well, then I guess we should all stop using Linux too, so I don't think that's what you mean.

@johnlorimer I procrastinated for ages too. I finally started making actual switches when I stopped thinking that I had to do it all at once. I started just moving away from Big Tech step by step, at my own tempo, and am pleasantly surprised to see that there is an accumulated effect. I'm getting there, we're all getting there 🙂
