Last night, we saw the security light come on in the back. It was triggered by the skunk that was drinking from the granite bowl in the rock fountain.

We realized that Obie was crouched on the edge of the back deck at the top of the steps. The skunk finished drinking and trundled straight over to the deck, up the steps, and investigated Obie. Obie did absolutely nothing. Didn’t move, didn’t react, just remained as he was.

The skunk turned itself around and pointed its tail at Obie. We were worried as hell by this time. We thought we’d have a skunked cat and we’d have to figure out how to de-skunk him. But nothing happened. Then the skunk turned around and made a little nip at Obie’s back end. To our amazement, Obie still made no move at all. We couldn’t decide whether he instinctively knew that was the right way to respond or whether he was too naïve to know the danger he was in.

The skunk showed Obie the back of his tail one more time, then lost interest and wandered into the back yard. We were so damned relieved.

We brought Obie in early, just to be safe.
