    Critiques of AI are valid; but many climate-based arguments reveal our bias toward small individual actions over real systemic change. e.g. ⬇️ An LLM query = running a microwave for seconds An hour of Netflix = enough to make popcorn Yet few are boycotting their fav shows. I did read first and there is some interesting stuff there though most is not LLM.

      I agree real systemic change is needed. And we also need to realize that your query output is going to have a variable energy cost. Are we outputting text, audio, video, etc. Are we making a movie or a LLM driven character? And how much penetration and usage do LLMs have compared to Netflix?

      So the change will have to be at the data center side, not industry.

        Great article - balanced, and faces down the essential elements

        I use AI as part of my qualitative research, and it is very helpful in shortening the time it takes to get a basic understanding of a new corpus, and in spotting omissions
        I use AI in my fiction writing to check continuity, get a level-3 review, and spot plot turns I need to tighten. It is also hilariously enjoyable.
        Creating an infographic storyboard of my stories/books is fun and helpful

          @InkySchwartz
          The change can only be effective on the consumer side, and as part of an adult understanding of the total cost of ownership of EVERYTHING we use. From the cost of creating and supplying that metal spoon stirring one's coffee, to the cost of the growing, harvesting, processing, and shipping of the coffee, and the energy to heat the water.

          ... and we need a sober look at what those costs are and to whom
