I have an amazing relationship with my cat Belle.
For our first 9 years together, her happy place was to seek where I was and curl herself into the V between my legs and comfortably slumber. She would not purr, but you knew she felt loved and safe.
Advance to the last half year, when she and I have been in our new apartment. She discovered the joy of being a lap kitty. She curled herself into my lap whilst on the home office chair, blissful as I cradled her sides. She even began to purr for me. She also is comforted by one or more of her back paws being cradled, something I've never before seen in a cat.
And now the last month. She will find me whilst I lay on the bed. She curls herself against my chest, often resting her head on my arm. She sighs easily occasionally. From time to time she reaches her sweet paws out around me, and you can't tell who is comforting whom. She purrs for me at a minute or more most days. We do this easily for a half hour, and we are happy.
I've never had such easy closeness and pure love with other humans. To have this connection with my dear kitty is a gift that brings such life joy.

I also find my relationship with my kitties (esp the girl) still “evolve” after 10+ years. She now keeps purring when I pick her up.
And yes, relationships with cats (pets) are often easier and “purer” than with humans. We don’t put ulterior motives on them, and tho they can do annoying things, we know they’re not doing it TO annoy us (or rather, despite knowing it will annoy us).
