#HerStorySylvia Robinson was a singer, producer, and label lead with sharp instincts that changed culture.
She rose to number 1 on the #RandB charts with the very sexy Pillow Talk in 1973, covered by Janet Jackson later.
Years later, she saw hip hop and MCs playing live. She loved the energy of rapping, which was only heard on the street or at parties. She quickly auditioned three rappers off the street in her teal Oldsmobile 98 and immediately took them to her mansion for more refinement.
Not able to decide which one to record, she put them together right there as the Sugar Hill Gang. They recorded Rapper's Delight a few days later. She is playing bass on that track.
Resistant radio stations eventually played this unusual music and listeners could not get enough. -
