    I would like to congratulate the Ritchie / Bonnie Doon areas for winning the Edmonton snow-clearing sweepstakes. Also select neighbourhoods in Mill Woods & the far south side. Your residential streets & alleys are currently listed as scheduled for plowing, so you might get pavement instead of rivers & lakes when the week of above-freezing temperatures starts on Saturday.

    (PS, get yer cars off the street so the plows can do their jobs)

    Find out when your neighbourhood gets added to the clearing schedule on the interactive map.

      @AmeliasBrain Not pavement as they blade to 5cm to remove the ruts. Blading to pavement would take a few times longer I think.

        @Chigaze Ah, that's true. So, with blading instead of plowing there will be a reduction of the amount of snow that will be there to melt, but people will still need to go clear the drainage basins if they want to see any pavement!

        Also, now that I check the main city website, the residential parking bans don't start until Monday, so things will already be quite melty by then.

        The plows are all over the main roads again on the live map today, so I guess they're still doing windrows & other clean-up.

          @AmeliasBrain Sounds like they're doing a light blade on some neighbourhoods early. Tara on CBC this morning said they did her neighbourhood and I think she's in Queen Mary Park. For the drainage I know last year they had steam trucks clearing the drains in the spring. Hopefully they have something planned for this big warm spell.

            @Chigaze @AmeliasBrain I’m in the β€˜scheduled area’ but I’m worried we might be bladed just before the thaw out this weekend making the roads even worse after a night time refreeze cycle

              @linux_mclinuxface @Chigaze Given the forecast (lows above freezing for a week), I'm not worried about the plows smoothing things out. Everywhere that still has snowpack will be ice rinks once the temperature drops again. Anything that can remove the amount of snow & ice build-up will increase the chance of getting down to dry ground by the end of the thaw.

                @AmeliasBrain @Chigaze I’m doubtful residential streets will get to dry ground since the drains are unlikely to thaw. No where for the snow to go. We’re going to need removal for dry ground.

                This amount of snow is more typical for an entire season. We get a slow thaw for a month March-ish to get us to that point for this volume to dry ground.

                I hope I’m wrong but we should buckle up for some icy roads for quite some time.

                  @linux_mclinuxface I think bladed flat will be better for that cycle than what's going to happen when the mess on my street thaws and freezes. Right now it's soft and still pushes people around. When the uneven ruts are frozen it won't be good.

                  That said, it looks like we might just be into a full thaw for a week as the forecast lows are all above zero.

                    @linux_mclinuxface @AmeliasBrain I'm hoping they send out steam trucks to clear the drains. Somewhat tempted to work my neighbour to clear the one near me.

                      @Chigaze
                      Maybe. I’m skeptical that we’re going to near a full thaw. 6-7 days in Jan above freezing is vastly different than 6-7 days above freezing in March when the day is much longer. Sunlight is everything.

                        @linux_mclinuxface @Chigaze That's true. Air temperatures are different than ground temperatures. But that again means that getting closer to exposed ground will make a difference.
