Premier Kinew and Minister Asagwara aren’t leaving seniors at the mercy of the market, they’re stepping in to save these precious elder care beds. This is exactly what we mean when we say that the role of the government is to goddamn govern.
We cannot leave something as important as senior care in the hands of private corporations that know the price of everything and the value of nothing. It’s time to bring long-term care into the public and non-profit system where it belongs.

I just received a bill for $28,000 for two months of care for my parents and the care has not been great since both have been hospitalized during that time from infections.
I don’t know how many of us can afford to pay. If we didn’t pay, they would be at the mercy of the government who gets to decide where they would go. They were initially suggesting places that were hours away and where they have no family or friends. I felt lucky to find them this place.
But, yeah. That’s the #.
