It was -3 °C this morning at #UVic. How unusual is that in February?
The first figure shows daily average temperature with the range. Red is 2026, blue is the long-term (23 years) statistics. Today was a break from the pattern this month, and overall.
The second figure shows every daily minimum temperature in February observed here at UVic, with a corresponding histogram. 17% of February days have been below 0 °C and only about 2% as cold as today. The histogram is an asymmetric 'normal' distribution because very cold events are caused by a different atmospheric process or system than what's usual here in Victoria. They represent continental polar air masses that rarely reach us in the southwest of Canada.
The last figure is a composite of hourly temperature relative frequency (orange shading) and temperature time series for a few years. 2026-02-20 is the incomplete red line. The low this morning is unusual.
Back to normal temperatures tonight.
