I still remember finding out about Mastodon through a post like this (can't remember where). The no ads and no algorithms part was the one that hooked me. It's been a few years since and no regret being on #Mastodon.

My #socialmedia habits have changed.

I've let go of the desire to be seen my many. I want instead to be seen by the people who are genuinely interested in connecting and are civil beings.

I've let go of the idea of kloud or having tons of followers. I no longer want followers I just want online friends. The number I have is very tiny but that's great. If I have too many I wouldn't be able to focus and really establish relationships with them.

@liztai @Mastodon It wasn't until I had one post actually *seen* by many that I realized that I hadn't thought of anything beyond the idea of it. Nothing about what it might be like (it was stressful waiting for comments from trolls to delete and/or feel bad about), or what I even thought I would get out of it *afterward*. Even the idea of somehow getting to support myself as, for example, a full-time touring cyclist by doing that (a completely unrealistic dream) sounds like a great way to suck all the fun out of it.

I like my handful of people here and visiting my blog.

The other nice thing about a blog? Most people who want to be jerks are lazy. They would rather review short form posts and content than a 3000 word blog post.
