    #WinterOlympics #FigureSkating #TheAgonyOfDefeat

IMO, despite the slight "hot mic" gaff spoken in the moment, I think #Malanin (who is only 21) handled his melt down on the ice in the Men's Free Skate with amazing grace & maturity faced with questions not one of us would have wanted to answer in a similar situation.

If I happened to me, all I would have wanted to do would have been to run & hide & lick my psychic wounds BUT Malanin stood in front of cameras & reporters answering the painful questions without being defensive or reacting with antagonism (as #POTUS47 famously does when asked questions he doesn't want to hear or answer).

It will be a long 4 years to get back to the #Olympics but Malanin should make it back & I hope he will have conquered the yips & wins the Gold Medal the next time around.

But, yeah, until then, it would be best if he stopped referring to himself as the #QuadGod. LOL! 🤦‍♂️

@sgt1372 what he said was exactly right. If he'd been in the 2022 Olympics he *would* have known how to handle the stress better this year. I was rather amazed how quickly he rebounded from such a massive disappointment.

@lakelady IDK about that. He handled the stress of performing the Short & Free Skate in the Team Competition pretty well.

And he handled the Short Individual program well. So, what made the Individual Free Skate different for him? 🤔

Malanin had a 7 Quad program planned for the Free Skate & there was a lot of pressure on him to live up to expectations to perform it successfully.

In this context, Scott Hamilton's "analysis" of what happened makes the most sense.

In his view, after Malanin popped the Quad Axel (his signature jump) everything just to sh*t in his mind how to fix it. If he had just put that failure out of his mind & skated the rest of his program as best he could he probably still would have won the Gold (or at least the Silver) but instead he suffered a cascade of negative emotions which took away his focus & took him entirely out of the competition.🤷‍♂️

He'll have 4 years to process the incident, hopefully with the help of a skilled sports psychologist, so that it won't happen again.

@sgt1372 w/ each performance the expectations increased. I was thinking earlier about how Olympics R different than other competitions. Single sport competitions all are focused on 1 sport, participants & audience alike. Here it's multiple sports, multiple audiences. Very different than what he's used to. Many more mental distractions. /more

@sgt1372 /continued - I agree that the fault was in his mental game, not the physical. Hence his comment that if he'd been an Olympian in 2022 he'd have had that experience to learn how to handle Olympic pressures.

@lakelady Well, as I note above, I don't think that would have mattered, since he skated 3 performances well before he melted down in the Individual Free Skate but, taking your POV, with this experience in 2026 now under his belt now, there should be no reason why he won't win the Gold in 2030.

For his sake, let's hope so. 🙏

@sgt1372 I didn't hear the interview, but I read about it, and I had same reaction you did. Amazing grace, indeed. (And yeah, that Quad God thing needs to be shelved.)
